Wave Interference Sandbox

Created by Aashvik Goel.

Interference Field

Colors show where waves add and cancel.

Interactive 2D field where color encodes the total wave amplitude from two sources.

Controls

Move sources & detector

  • Drag the two glowing dots (sources) directly on the field.
  • Drag the ring-shaped marker to move the detector/observer.
  • Or use keyboard: 1/2 to select a source, then arrows to move.
λ ≈ 100 px
ω ≈ 4

What you're seeing

Each pixel acts like a small detector. For every pixel we compute the distance r from each source and evaluate the wave S = A · sin( k·r − ω·t ). The total signal is Stotal = S1 + S2.

  • Bright bands → strong constructive interference
  • Dark lines → destructive interference
  • Detector ring shows the local value of S at its position

Tip: drag the sources close together, then as you drag them farther apart try to recognize the pattern.
